Because other animals share our land, and they aren't necessarily friendly to alpacas and cats, we purchased Biff, an Akbash Dog, to be our Livestock Guardian Dog. LGDs, as they are known, are breeds of dogs that historically have guarded sheep and goats. They have low predatory instincts and the ability to bond with the livestock they guard. Biff is great at his job, barking at anything he thinks is threatening and patrolling our land at night. For more information on these types of dogs, go to www.lgd.org .

Luna is a beautiful young tricolor female collie, whose registered name is Kindred Spirit's Light in the Dark. (Luna means moon, which is the light in the dark?). Luna is a sweet and loving girl, who enjoys the company of other dogs and just loves her toys. She is a very active collie who loves to chase cars, so she spends her time either in the house or in her huge fenced-in backyard. Trips to the Mt Washington Dog Park are also a favorite pastime, as that is where she gets to romp with other dogs. Luna has the sweet collie disposition and gets along well with all the cats in the family, including the tiny kittens who grow up here.

Teddy Bear is a rescue dog who came up to New England from an overwhelmed Tennessee shelter, through the rescue group Big Fluffy Dogs, www.bigfluffydogs.com . He is thought to be a cross between a Great Pyrenees and a Golden Retreiver. He is a very sweet, calm boy with the temperment of a Pyr and the beautiful coat of the Golden. He loves to be in the house with us and is a playmate for Luna, who just loves other dogs. Teddy is wonderful with the cats and seems to like all other dogs. We hope he is happy here on the farm, and that he will eventually understand that he is in his forever home. We thank Big Fluffy Dog Rescue for saving the life of this wonderful dog. |

Many alpaca farms find that some type of fowl helps with bug control. We didn't want any noisy Guinea fowl, or loud and sometimes mean Geese, so resisted getting birds for awhile. But after seeing how the black flies and other bugs bothered our alpacas, we found the perfect breed of Ducks! We adopted three Muscovy Ducks, named Peter, Paul and Mary, who proceeded to produce many, many offspring. They became too much, so we sold the flock and kept two males to help with the bugs. Both had been born here and are beautifull black and white in coloring. Although we miss the ducklings around, it is certainly a lot cleaner in the barn and yard with only two ducks! Gimpy and Loner Duck live happily around the farm.

We didn't forget about our interest in goats and had two wethers to add to the farm. They were best buddies, but Jake is all we have left now. He seems content with the alpacas in the pasture next door. Dick takes him for walks, which he enjoys, and we feed him his favorite weeds whenever we pass his pen. Jake is a very large, Toggenburg-type boy, who really only likes Dick. His companion from 'kid-hood', Elwood, has now gone to the Rainbow Bridge to wait for him there.
